Experiencing the Zoo with Ease: Sensory-Friendly Resources at the Little Rock Zoo

LITTLE ROCK (April 3, 2025) – April is Autism Awareness Month, and at the Little Rock Zoo, we are committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all our guests. We understand that some visitors may experience sensory sensitivities, and we strive to make the Zoo as accessible and enjoyable as possible for everyone.

Certified Sensory Inclusive

Since 2023, the Little Rock Zoo has been officially certified as Sensory Inclusive through KultureCity, a leading nonprofit that helps organizations create accommodating spaces for individuals with sensory sensitivities. This certification means our staff has been trained to assist guests who may need additional support during their visit. We are proud to be working toward our third year of certification, ensuring that we maintain and improve our commitment to accessibility.

Sensory Bags for Guests

To help guests who may need additional resources, we offer sensory bags at the Zoo. These bags contain helpful tools such as noise-canceling headphones, fidget toys, and verbal cue cards to help create a more comfortable experience. These items can be especially beneficial in areas that may have louder noises or higher levels of activity. Guests can check out sensory bags in the Gift Shop at the front of the Zoo.

For Calli and her son, these resources made all the difference during their Spring Break 2025 visit to the Zoo. Calli was overjoyed to discover that the Zoo offers KultureCity tools for free that allow her son to enjoy the Zoo at his own pace and in his own way. Stories like this inspire us to continue improving and expanding our sensory-friendly offerings.

Sensory Signage Throughout the Zoo

Some areas of the Zoo can be more stimulating than others, which is why we have placed sensory signage throughout the park. These signs help guests identify spaces that may be louder or more crowded, as well as quiet zones where they can take a break if needed. By providing clear guidance, we aim to make it easier for visitors to navigate the Zoo in a way that best suits their comfort level.

Social Story for Trip Planning

Planning ahead can make a big difference in ensuring a smooth and enjoyable visit. To assist with this, we offer a social story available on our website. This resource provides a step-by-step guide on what to expect when visiting the Zoo, helping guests familiarize themselves with the environment before they arrive. Families and caregivers can use this tool to prepare their loved ones for a fun and stress-free experience.

At the Little Rock Zoo, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy the wonders of wildlife. Whether it’s through our sensory-friendly resources or our ongoing commitment to inclusivity, we are proud to support all our guests in having a memorable visit.

Plan your visit today and experience the Little Rock Zoo in a way that best fits your needs. We can’t wait to welcome you!
